Britney Domine Madison

Electronics Technician 2, U.S. Navy
Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology& American Indian Studies, San Diego State University

Growing up on the Wind River Reservation, Britney joined the military following in the footsteps of her parents, who met while both serving in the Navy. Britney’s mom encouraged her to join the Navy following High School, however she decided to attend college while working at the local casino as a table games dealer. Bored with school and feeling stuck in a job that would keep her living on the reservation, she realized she wanted a career that provided opportunity and structure as well as allowing her to be apart of something bigger than herself.

During her 6 years of service, Britney served as an Electronics Technician with a specialty in various areas including, maintenance, operations, air traffic control radar, and meteorologist equipment technician. She completed a WestPac deployment aboard the USS Boxer where her wrist was sprained at that time. Her service also resulted in injuries to her neck/back, hips and knees due to multiple years of continuous physically stress. The transition following her service proved to be more challenging mentally as she found it difficult to relate to civilians and fellow students as she returned to school due to the age difference and life experience. The long hours of sitting in a classroom also caused additional pain to her back and hips which others could not relate to the struggle.

Britney found a community through the veterans’ centers at Grossmont College and San Diego State University which helped bridge the gap in relating to other students. It was through the veteran center and Graduated Sentinel Derek Abbey that she learned about Sentinels of Freedom. SOF proudly supported Britney through housing support and consistent check-ins throughout her program to provide encouragement and accountability as she completed her degree in Anthropology. She graduated in May 2022 and was selected for an internship with Warrior Scholar Project as a Senior Humanities Fellow, where she had the opportunity to participate in their WSP Fellow Summer Program in 2022. Britney was able to share her experience and even referred fellow veterans to SOF during the summer program.

Following the summer program, Britney worked in Cultural Resource Management as an Archaeologist providing historic and prehistoric artifact identification, site evaluation, data recovery, and cultural construction monitoring from 2022-2024. In 2024 Britney got married and moved to Florida where she began working on Eglin Air Force Base as a contractor with Cultural Resources cataloging and archival storage of artifacts.

Britney will begin furthering her education with a Masters in Anthropology and still has goals to become a Forensic Anthropologist working to identify remains of military members that were Prisoners of War, Missing in Action and/or Killed in Action. She has a strong desire to continue to serve and help bring home the remains of fallen service members.

“I am extremely grateful to SOF as it has been great for financial stability and support as well as giving me another sector of the student veteran community to be a part of.”
